Why bother with practical training? Is it really important?

It is not enough to acquire theoretical knowledge; you must also know how to put it to use in the real word. India has one of the largest workforce in the world. Indians have strong theoretical knowledge and have good command over English. Despite these advantages employability in India of engineers is low. According to the National Employability Report (NER) 2011, while India produces more than 500,000 engineers annually, only a miniscule 3.51 per cent are appropriately trained to be directly deployed on projects. The interviewers usually look for three things- theoretical knowledge, practical experience and soft skills and though most of the newly graduates have good theoretical knowledge they lack in practical experience and soft skills.

The solution for success in industry is integration of theoretical learning with practical experience. Studies conducted by various research groups have shown that practical training increased students’ understanding of theoretical knowledge, retention and their motivation to study.  Practical training can provide valuable work experience by sharpening and adding to the skills you are learning in school. Labs sessions have been introduced as a part of the core curriculum; but most of the lab equipments are expensive and complicated to fix, hence several students work with one lab equipment to experiment and learn. Therefore a single student doesn’t get sufficient time and opportunity to explore all the aspects of the experiment. Many colleges like BITS PILANI and IIT Bombay are working towards providing their students industry training/internship as a part of their curriculum. In Colleges like Perdue and Cornell have students build products with every subject they learn on an individual basis, in addition to industrial training. The World Economic Forum estimates that 81% of U.S. engineering graduates are immediately “employable,” while only 25% of Indian graduates and 10% of Chinese graduates are equally well prepared for jobs. The difference is the quality of education provided. The graph below shows the number of students and money spent on education.

Practical training aims to elevate the students’ knowledge and skills in a specific profession of their respective fields and at the same time produce graduates who are credible, creative and proficient thus increasing their employability. It is natural to be worried about your interview. Most of us have interview jitters especially if it is for that dream job we always wanted. During the interview always be confident and positive even if things aren’t going as well as you’d hoped. Some people think they totally screwed up their interview and they actually end up getting the job. Confidence counts a lot. It is important to think positive to keep your mind in the right place so that you answer questions to the best of your ability.

  • There some  questions which will seem very general but it is important to remember that the interviewer is not there to have a conversation with you. He would be analysing you with every point. You don’t want to come across as egotistical or arrogant. Neither is this a time to be humble.
  • Dress appropriately . Always wear formal clothes and shoes. It is important to be well groomed before your interview as it gives the interviewer an idea of how disciplined you are and how serious you are for the job.
  • Try to find out what the interviewer is looking for. You should try to show or tell the interviewer in the interiew atleast one quality about you that make you unique from other candidates and would be valuable to the company if they hired you. This will give you an edge over candidates with similar background and achievements as you.
  • Don’t get nervous if the interview lasts too long and they are asking you a lot of questions. Remember the interviewers are not there to waste their time. If they are investing so much time in your interview they are most likely interested in hiring you.
  • Never speak badly about your current or former employer. If you speak badly in the interview about a former employer, this shows that you are not committed to the company you work for.

Some other sites to find good research news are AlphaGalileo, ScienceDaily, Futurity etc. Some of the papers are free while some would be for sale. You should decide which paper to buy or not by reading its abstract carefully.

Books

You can either search for e-books online or in a public/college library. In case you are planning to buy a book try asking about the book on online forums or to your teachers or peers who work in the same field.

Write the Purpose

Write down the purpose of your research in one line. It very important to know yourself and be focused on what you want to accomplish through the research.

How to create a professional technical presentation?

Use the below mentioned tips to create and effective technical presentation:

  • Do not use gaudy colors or extreme contrasts
    Technical presentations use sober soothing colors that are easy to read and easy on eyes. Do not use contrast colors on slides. Sober colors make it look professional
  • Use points, avoid full sentences
    Effective professional presentations do not write a story, make bullets short but effective. You don’t have to be there to explain the points, they should be self explanatory
  • Use plenty descriptive visual aids
    A picture paints a thousand words. Technical presenatations must use usual aids like graphs, circuit diagrams, block diagrams and graphics. Ensure you properly label them and explain in words what it means
  • Maximum 6 points per slide
    Do not clutter slides. Ensure goods font size and less information in one slide all belonging to the same topic. Avoid wordiness.
  • Choose your slide title effectively
    Ensure the title tells the message you are trying to convey. Do not jump topics. Break the slides if there are too many things you need to cover
  • Check spellings, grammar
    Ensure there are no spelling mistakes or grammatical mistakes. Technical presenatations or any other documents must not have spelling mistakes. Proof read and spell check before your submit or present slides
  • First slide must have outline
    The first slide must have everything you are going to cover, otherwise you might get a lot of questions about things you may already be covering in the slides
  • Be consistent with transitions
    Do not go crazy with creativity and transitions, DO NOT use random transitions. They can be very annoying. Avoid sounds effects when transitioning, they appear kiddish.
  • Do not go overboard with animation
    Noice technical presenters or newbies like to show off their new cool features. Animation is fine, but keep it to decent quantity.
  • Use different size font to show hierarchy
    Ensure you have major points, then you have sub bullets . Ensure proper delimitations.
  • Keep same font
    Do not change the style of the font from one slide to another. Use easy to read font, so that matter can be understood.
  • Capitalize only if necessary
    Do not capitalize the entire bullet. It is rude to be shouting (capitalization means shouting) throughout the presentation. Only use caps when stressing on certain key information.
  • Use simple background
    If these slides are printed ensure they look good. Too much animation, flowers or color make it look kiddish.

Simple steps to do PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Testing

In this blog are some basic procedures for finding faults with PCBs and fixing those faults. Though there are many in circuit testing programs and probes available in the market for skilled technicians and test engineers professional essay writing service there are no general guidelines given for novice users.

Testing jobs are abundant in number. So for those of you who are new to PCB testing and troubleshooting here are some general guidelines which would surely help you solve most of your basic problems.

  • If you face some problems like when you end up removing an entire track (connection from one component to another) on the PCB you can use a simple piece of wire to imitate the connection. Solder the two ends of the wire where you think the connection should be present on the PCB.
  • Transistors can be damaged by heat when soldering or by misuse in a circuit. If you suspect that a transistor may be damaged there is an easy way to test it. Use a multi meter to check each pair of leads for conduction. Set a digital multi meter to diode test and an analog multi meter to a low resistance range. Test each pair of leads both ways:
  1. The base-emitter (BE) junction should behave like a diode and conduct one way only.
  2. The base-collector (BC) junction should behave like a diode and conduct one way only.
  3. The collector-emitter (CE) should not conduct either way.
  • To test a capacitor, first short the capacitor leads for discharging it completely. Set the multi-meter to high resistance mode. Connect the multi-meter terminals to the capacitor leads. For electrolytic capacitors the positive terminal of multi-meter must be connected to the positive lead of the capacitor and negative terminal of multi-meter to the negative lead of capacitor. At the moment you connect the multi-meter terminals to the capacitor leads, the multi-meter needle will move to zero and then slowly move towards infinity and settle there. This will happen only if the capacitor under test is healthy.
  • To check an ordinary silicon diode using a digital multi-meter, put the multi-meter selector switch in the diode check mode. Connect the positive lead of multi-meter to the anode and negative lead to cathode of the diode. If multi-meter displays a voltage between 0.6V to 0.7V, we can assume that the diode is healthy. This is the test for checking the forward conduction mode of diode.
  • Though we have tried to cover most of the basic problems faced by new users, you might still face some problems which are circuit specific. SOLDERING – how to do it right?

In case you are an engineer or someone who is interested in building your own cool products or fixing something around the house, soldering will be a good skill to learn.

What is Soldering?

Soldering is the joining of metals by a fusion of alloys which have relatively low melting points. In other words, you use a metal that has a low melting point to adhere the surfaces to be soldered together. Consider that soldering is more like gluing with molten metal, unlike welding where the base metals are actually melted and combined. Soldering is also a must have skill for all sorts of electrical and electronics work. It is also a skill that must be taught correctly and developed with practice.

Tools required for soldering?

Some tools which you should keep by your side before soldering are soldering gun, soldering gun stand, wire cutter and stripper, soldering wik, solder.

What is solder made of?

The choice of solder is also important. There several kinds of solder available but only a few are suitable for electronics work. Most importantly, you will only use rosin core solder. Acid core solder is common in hardware stores and home improvement stores, but meant for soldering copper plumbing pipes and not electronic circuits.

For most printed circuit board work, a solder with a diameter of 0.75mm to 1.0mm is desirable.

How to choose soldering gun?

Here we give you a few tips on how to solder the component’s of an electronic circuit properly. For normal electronics use, a soldering iron is generally the tool of choice as its small tip and low heat capacity is suited for printed circuit board work (such as assembling kits). A soldering gun is generally used in heavy duty soldering such as joining heavy gauge wires, soldering brackets to a chassis or stained glass work.

Procedure:

  1. A PCB typically has two sides. Place the component with its leads through the appropriate holes, with the body of the component on the side without metal printing, and the long ends of the leads on the same side as the metal printing.  If the component does not stay on its own, bend the leads slightly against the sides of the holes they are in.
  2. You can start by warming up the soldering iron thoroughly. This is especially important if the iron is new because it may have been packed with some kind of coating to prevent corrosion.
  3. While the soldering iron is warming up, prepare a little space to work. Moisten a little sponge and place it in the base of your soldering iron stand or in a dish close by. Lay down a piece of cardboard in case you drip solder and make sure you have room to work comfortably.
  4. To test if the soldering iron is hot, touch the solder slightly to the soldering gun, some fumes will come out if the iron is hot.
  5. Once the soldering gun is heated up thoroughly coat the soldering tip in solder. Make sure that the tip is totally coated in solder. Wipe the tip off on the wet sponge to remove the excess flux residue. Do this immediately so there is no time for the flux to dry out and solidify.
  6. Heat the lead and the board, otherwise the solder will simply pool and refuse to stick to the unheated item. For this place the tip of the soldering iron so that it touches both the component’s lead, and the metal printing on the circuit board.  Touch the tip of the strand of solder to the component lead and solder pad, but not the tip of the iron. *Warning* Leaving the soldering iron on a circuit board too long can damage it.

How to de-solder?

Desoldering is the removal of solder and components from a circuit for troubleshooting, for repair purposes, component replacement, and to salvage components. Specialized tools, materials, and techniques have been devised to avoid damaging the circuit board, surrounding components and the component being removed in the desoldering process. There are two ways to remove the solder. They are:

With a desoldering pump (solder sucker): Set the desoldering pump in position by locking the plunger down. Then touch the joint to be desoldered, using both pump and the heated soldering gun. After the solder is melted, plunger is released to suck away the molten solder into the pump. Repeat this process to remove the solder completely or maximum solder removed.

Using a desoldering wire/copper braid:Put the desoldering wire and the heated soldering gun near the joint. As the solder melts, it gets sticked to the desoldering wire. After this, remove the desoldering wire first followed by the soldering gun.

After the solder is taken out, you will be able to take out the component lead easily. If you are not able to take out the component, then apply the heated solder iron and simultaneously try to pick the component by taking care to avoid burning yourself.

Precaution:

Remember that when soldering, the flux in the solder will release fumes as it is heated. These fumes are harmful to your eyes and lungs. Therefore, always work in a well-ventilated area and avoid breathing the smoke created. Hot solder is also dangerous. It is surprisingly easy to splash hot solder onto yourself, which is a thoroughly unpleasant experience. Eye protection is also advised.
